The Thoracic Surgery Department specializes in the surgical treatment of diseases affecting the organs within the chest (thorax), including the lungs, oesophagus, mediastinum, trachea, and chest wall. Thoracic surgeons perform complex and often life-saving procedures for both benign and malignant conditions. With advancements in minimally invasive and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), the department focuses on delivering precise, safe, and efficient surgical care while ensuring faster recovery and reduced complications. The Thoracic Surgery team works closely with pulmonologists, oncologists, radiologists, and intensivists to offer comprehensive and multidisciplinary thoracic care.

Importance in Public Health
Thoracic diseases such as lung cancer, tuberculosis, trauma, and pleural diseases remain major public health challenges worldwide. Thoracic surgeons play a crucial role in early detection, curative treatment, and life-saving interventions. With rising air pollution, smoking, and occupational hazards, the incidence of thoracic conditions is increasing, making thoracic surgery a vital specialty. Minimally invasive techniques have improved patient outcomes, reduced hospital stays, and enhanced recovery, allowing more patients to access advanced surgical care. In cancer care especially, thoracic surgeons contribute significantly to survival and quality of life. The department also supports screening programs, surgical education, and lung health awareness, strengthening its role in preventive and therapeutic public health strategies.
