1. Introduction

The Nephrology Department focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of kidney-related diseases. Nephrologists are specialists who deal with both acute and chronic kidney conditions, including kidney failure, glomerulonephritis, hypertension, and electrolyte imbalances. The department offers comprehensive care that includes dialysis (haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis), kidney biopsy, and preparation for kidney transplantation. With the growing burden of lifestyle-related disorders such as diabetes and hypertension, the role of nephrology in preventing kidney disease progression has become increasingly vital. Our nephrologists work closely with endocrinologists, urologists, and transplant teams to offer multidisciplinary renal care.

Importance in Public Health

Kidney disease is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it progresses without early symptoms and is commonly detected late. With the increasing prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and aging, kidney-related illnesses are now a major public health concern. Nephrology plays a vital role in early detection, slowing disease progression, and preventing kidney failure. Timely intervention can delay or eliminate the need for dialysis or transplantation. Nephrologists also contribute to educational outreach, preventive screenings, and community health programs, focusing on lifestyle changes, medication adherence, and fluid/electrolyte balance. By doing so, they help reduce the burden on healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes.
